Weekly Workshops at City of Asylum @ Alphabet City

Beginning Wednesday, January 31, our new weekly workshop on the Northside is open at City of Asylum at Alphabet City. Join us each Wednesday from 5:00pm – 6:00pm as we spend an hour writing at the Alphabet City.

New to the weekly workshop? All you need to do is bring in a completed application to participate.

Weekly workshops for self-identified teen girls age 13-18 are open to the public. Bring something you’ve written and share or write with us during our hour long sessions. Our first Wednesday at Alphabet City is January 31.

Join Northside facilitator, Allie each Wednesday:

Allie Reznik is dedicated to empowering students through mentoring and teaching strong communication skills. When she’s not geeking out with her students about Beyoncé or searching for veterinary school scholarships with her Higher Achievement mentee, she’s writing about the power dynamics of black and white women performers as a PhD Candidate in Duquesne University’s English department.

Allie’s favorite collaborative project is the “Who Run(s) the World?”: Power and Performance in World Literature course website that includes student-written articles about activism, events, and analyses of women and girls’ navigation of power systems around the world.

Allie has been recognized as a Who’s Next in Education recipient by The Incline and a recipient of the Graduate Student Teaching Award by Duquesne University’s Center for Teaching Excellence.

Her article “Popular Music & Colonial Violence in Bessie Head’s A Question of Power” (Lamar Journal of the Humanities, 2017) brings postcolonial theory to a word and music studies lens. She has reviewed for Journal of American Culture and Ars Lyrica, and has twice contributed to the “Year in Conferences” feature for ESQ: Journal of the American Renaissance.
